10:38 pm
hey, there was something going on, the news reports were telling us that there was a shooting and as news has come out and we are starting to reach out to our friends who have texted us and said hey, we're 0k, we're out of there, or we are stuck, we can't get out of the garage, things like that. find are stuck, we can't get out of the garage, things like that. and what was running _ garage, things like that. and what was running through _ garage, things like that. and what was running through your - garage, things like that. and what was running through your head - garage, things like that. and what i was running through your head when you are finding out the details of what happened? it’s you are finding out the details of what happened? you are finding out the details of what hauened? *, . ., , what happened? it's incredulous, we know where — what happened? it's incredulous, we know where the _ what happened? it's incredulous, we know where the hospitals _ what happened? it's incredulous, we know where the hospitals are - know where the hospitals are compared to where the event is, so it's pretty immediate. we are tracking footage that's on ex as well as from our friends who are saying check on this channel for the news because they are showing this view, the news reports are very calming because they are telling us only what they know and they are not ramping up emotions. there are some

kids that are being interviewed that were involved with, not involved, but they witnessed the shooting or they witnessed people running in and out of the buildings. so it's a little scary because there are a lot of kids down here because the local school districts have what's called a red snow day, we had a bunch of snow days just earlier in the month and injanuary so this was a treat and injanuary so this was a treat and it's beautiful out. and in january so this was a treat and it's beautiful out.— and in january so this was a treat and it's beautiful out. yeah, and no one could have _ and it's beautiful out. yeah, and no one could have predicted _ and it's beautiful out. yeah, and no one could have predicted how - and it's beautiful out. yeah, and no one could have predicted how it - one could have predicted how it ended. melody, izzy, thank you so much for coming the programme. subject to be absolutely clear these pictures we're watching now are not live, this was earlier in the aftermath of what should have been just a celebration, a victory parade for the fans of kansas city chiefs, they are remarkable achievement of winning back—to—back super bowls,
10:40 pm
but that taking place at the conclusion of the parade, at union station, to people, two gunmen, two armed people detained at the scene between 10—15 people injured, one dead. we heard earlierfrom the police in that press conference and we also heard at that same press conference from the mayor, let's take a listen. we conference from the mayor, let's take a listen.— conference from the mayor, let's take a listen. we had 600 kansas city missouri _ take a listen. we had 600 kansas city missouri police _ take a listen. we had 600 kansas city missouri police department l city missouri police department officers, 250 from outside agencies. we went out today like anyone in kansas city looking to have a celebration, that celebration was marred by a shooting today. and we recognise that there are some who are injured, we are praying for the safety of everyone. we have talked to a few different folks so far. we've spoken to the kansas city chiefs who make clear that their prayers are with everyone who was at the parade today, everyone in kansas city and everyone who was touched by this incident. they also noted that their players, coaches and staff are
10:41 pm
all accounted for at this point and safe. we however note that this is a fluid situation so all we are sharing now may change as the hours go ahead. we also received a call from the white house that offered all federal assistance in the investigation, we have federal agencies present today, we appreciated that and certainly in the days ahead and the hours ahead we will make sure to continue to do this work. i will say, personally, first, a thank you to the women and men of law enforcement, the women and men who work with the kansas city to fire department and our other agencies, when the shooting started i, like many others, ran and ran for safety. i saw a number of agencies including the kansas city police department officers with guns drawn were running towards danger. we thank them for that. as i was leaving the scene, i saw members of our kansas city fire department administering aid to folks who are seriously injured without concern for the shootings and the challenges that were near them. this is
10:42 pm
absolutely a tragedy, the likes of which we will never forget, and we will rememberfor some which we will never forget, and we will remember for some time. thank you to those who are making sure we were safe today, those investigating and those who will continue to make sure that those could who committed these acts today were be brought to justice. these acts today were be brought to 'ustice. . . , these acts today were be brought to 'ustice. ., ., , ., ., . justice. that was at that police briefin: justice. that was at that police briefing an _ justice. that was at that police briefing an hour— justice. that was at that police briefing an hour or _ justice. that was at that police briefing an hour or so - justice. that was at that police briefing an hour or so ago, - justice. that was at that police | briefing an hour or so ago, they will be continually updating with the latest details. they said they didn't have any answers with what led up to the shooting. but it adds to the specifics of what led up to the actual shooting itself it was through early to comment on that other than their officers were on the scene and they detained two gunmen immediately, their officers gave life—sustaining first aid to
10:43 pm
people who were hit at the scene. we know one person dead, between 10—15 injured. but let's go back down to the moment when there were a lot of people still there, the shooting had just happened, let's hear now from a couple of eyewitnesses. kush giving medical attention to them, the masses at this point are rushing west on pershing road towards the irs building, toward penn way. and i would say, probably no more than three minutes after that a second round of gunfire then happens, what i presume from the irs
10:44 pm
building. masses start running back this way, people are diving under semi trucks parked here, running in all sorts of directions, grabbing loved ones, i mean honestlyjust his hysteria. abs]!!! loved ones, i mean honestly 'ust his h steria. * ., ., , ~ hysteria. all of a sudden, pop! and we thought — hysteria. all of a sudden, pop! and we thought what _ hysteria. all of a sudden, pop! and we thought what was _ hysteria. all of a sudden, pop! and we thought what was that? - hysteria. all of a sudden, pop! and we thought what was that? the - hysteria. all of a sudden, pop! and l we thought what was that? the cops ran out _ we thought what was that? the cops ran out the _ we thought what was that? the cops ran out the building, they were running — ran out the building, they were running in _ ran out the building, they were running in the building first and now they're running out of the building — now they're running out of the building and they tell us to go go io building and they tell us to go go go and _ building and they tell us to go go go and we — building and they tell us to go go go and we are just out of there as fast we _ go and we are just out of there as fast we could. we saw some people start running, and we were like, "0k, the police ran into the building," so we didn't worry because there was a lot of police running. and then someone said, "oh, it was a fire," and then she comes running and she's like, "no, it's shots fired." and so we started listening to her, and then that's when everybody... i was just telling everybody to get down, get down and get out the way,
10:45 pm
and the officers were coming around. all of the sudden, people started crushing forward, | everybody started running, there was screaming. - we didn't know what was happening, but this day and age, _ when people run, you run. and so i put my arms— around her and we tried to push through so people wouldn't run - on top of us, and there was a woman crying, saying something about, "somebody had been shot." - of course, it's hard to know, is it a singular incident - or is there an active shooter? but we got pushed all the way up to union station, _ where they had gated everything off, so you couldn't get _ in, for the chiefs. and everybody started jumping the rails and i pushing everybody over. we got inside and we thought that, "ok, it's calm now, we're- inside, we're safe." they gives you some idea of what was happening and what people had to deal with, there were lots of people there, thousand and thousands of people were at the parade, and it just wrapped up, all of them trying to effectively leave and head off. as this was happening, there was a camera rolling with a cbs reporter standing out there who had been, until that moment, reporting on the victory parade, the happiness, the joy, victory parade, the happiness, the joy, the celebrations. then you get
10:46 pm
a sense that something has changed but they don't quite know what, take a look. guys, guys, guys, guys, guys! something's going on! something's going on, guys! even of the parade had finished, it was wrapping up, you could see behind the report of their sheer numbers of people. these are different pictures again from earlier, these are not live pictures here, these were in a slightly different location. you can see that reporter turned around and you got
10:47 pm
the sense straightaway that something had happened but they didn't quite know what and clearly shouting, guys, guys, guys something's happened, as people started moving more quickly away. and then these pictures from a little later and you can clearly see the lights of law enforcement there and people realising, you can almost hear what has taken place and as news spread that shots were fired, people ran, they ran in different directions, police press conference and a little earlier repeated sightings and mentions of the fact that as the crowds ran in one direction, police officers ran in the other, towards the danger, towards union station, guns drawn. and you see lots of red there because the red is the colour of the kansas city chiefs, the football team, so clearly all the fans out and about in theirjerseys coming to celebrate a second super bowl win in
10:48 pm
two years, back to back, a huge achievement, it's not particularly easyin achievement, it's not particularly easy in the nfl to do that. this is an interesting picture from early round because you got the sense there, you got the tv trucks who are there to cover the parade and as the camera keeps moving around, and a few more seconds it moves again, and here you get to see the people start to run, clearly some of them will have known what is going on and heard the shots, potentially but most will be moving away because they heard that something has gone wrong, heard gunfire, heard some incident and moving away, and as we heard from one of the eyewitnesses saying when people are running, you run. and the people in black there, you can see law—enforcement heading and the direction toward union station towards the incident. as other fans there file out. huge amounts of confusion, clearly, in the immediate minutes and moments afterwards, huge amounts of confusion because clearly there are
10:49 pm
so many people involved there, a huge logistical organisation putting on a victory parade and open top buses, people on the streets, confetti, a stage, huge operation which was why there were so many law enforcement and emergency services teams there, 800 law enforcement officers were there already. because officers were there already. because of the parade, because of the amount of the parade, because of the amount of people who were there, so presumably they were on the scene pretty quickly. when things happen. but clearly not quickly enough to prevent people being shot between 10-15 prevent people being shot between 10—15 people injured, one of those dead. police in their briefing wouldn't give any more details about specific conditions of different patients or the precise number they said work was still being done on that, we did get some numbers a little early around from the fire department, but we are waiting now for any final update. 0k,
10:50 pm
department, but we are waiting now forany final update. ok, let's department, but we are waiting now for any final update. ok, let's take forany final update. ok, let's take get for any final update. ok, let's take get a full round—up now from our correspondent tom bateman. i need you to go, i need you to go. people still in their sports shirts tend to the wounded. a celebration turns to chaos in the streets of kansas city. all of the sudden, people started crushing forward, everybody started running, there was screaming. call we didn't know what was happening, but this day and age, when people run, you run. they came to welcome their victors after a win in america's biggest sporting event. now, there's only panic. police say shots were fired close to union station, a major gathering point in the parade. they say multiple people have been struck — their condition remains unclear. at the conclusion of the chiefs rally today, there were shots fired on the west side of union station. immediately, officers responded to the area, took two people into custody and also immediately rendered life—sustaining
10:51 pm
aid to those victims. one reporter was about to go live when gunfire was heard... something's going on! ..leading to mass evacuation. it had started with a hero's welcome. for the second year running, the kansas city chiefs took the super bowl, and the winners came home again, with up to a million people packing the streets. police tonight say two armed people have been taken into custody. meanwhile, the team's star quarterback says he is praying for kansas city, as america's gun problem now haunts another mass event. thanks to tom for that round up there, talking us through what we know so far. you saw a bit from the police giving that press conference, that went on a little bit after that and then it seemed to finish and so the police chief walked up the steps
10:52 pm
and then she decided to come back down the steps and said this. ijust have one thing to say — this is not kansas city. i am angered by what happened, but i want you to know that the kansas city, missouri police department and all the law enforcement officers that were there today, that were serving and protecting, did the best that we could and i'm so proud of them that they ran into danger, getting two people into custody and at the same time rendering life—sustaining aid to those victims. we were here for a safe celebration, and because of two bad actors, or more, is why we are standing here today. we will recover as a city. my heart goes out to our victim who is deceased, but your police department stands ready and we are invested in the safety and betterment of kansas city. she said she was angry, people should expect a safe environment to
10:53 pm
come out and celebrate super bowl parade there, but she also commented on the actions of her officers heading towards the danger, guns drawn, but also giving life—sustaining aid to victims on the scene. immediately. and the mayor described the events as a strategy and we heard there from patrick my homes via social media saying prayers are with kansas city. so these are live pictures of kansas city, you can see clearly there the red jerseys of kansas city supporters, some still there, in the immediate aftermath police put messages out on social media pretty quickly asking people to evacuate the area. around union station. quickly and safely, they referenced a parking garage nearby where i
10:54 pm
think some aid was being given to victims, people impacted here, they asked people to get away from that area, too. but you can understand the confusion, and the chaos because although the parade had wrapped up and finished, there were still thousands of people there, some managed to get away, but others were around that station, not knowing what had happened and not walk knowing what was going on, and then as it became clearer, some giving help and helping people who had been hit, helping people who had been caught up. we know the police detained two armed people, relatively quickly it seems, but the police have not given us a full timeline yet, but two armed people taken in as the investigation continues our cbs news partners say
10:55 pm
this may not be terror —related, but as he and smith investigation is in early stages nothing will be ruled out by law enforcement at this stage. this event, a celebration of the kansas city chiefs super bowl win, concluding with a shooting between 10—15 people injured, one dead. plenty more coming up, i'm lewis vaughanjones, this is bbc news. hello there. some very wet, very mild conditions around at the moment. temperatures reached 16.5 degrees celsius in hereford on wednesday and it could turn even warmer still, perhaps, as we head through thursday. but the focus for the day's highest temperatures will tend to be further east. there's a lot more rain to come in the forecast as well, all of these weather fronts just pushing northwards and eastwards as we head through into thursday morning. so temperatures rising unusually through the night across much of scotland.
10:56 pm
and we'll start the day off on 12 or 13 degrees celsius towards the south of england and wales. all of that mild air just flowing in on that southerly wind from the azores. you can see all of that very mild air marked in the deep yellow there. it's a very wet start to the day across scotland, the heavy rain clearing northwards, being replaced by this batch of rain just pushing away from northern ireland. a cold front sweeping eastwards, giving some more heavy rain where the ground is already saturated, but it should stay largely dry ahead of the front across eastern areas of england. now, these are the average temperatures for this time of year, just 8 or 9 degrees. you can see just how mild it's going to be through the day on thursday. in fact, across parts of essex, we could even see 16 to 18 degrees celsius, perhaps, given any brightness. that's still well off the february record, but it will feel pleasantly warm, i think, for the time of year. now, as we head through thursday night, that cold front continues to sweep its way eastwards. and behind it, there's some slightly cooler—feeling air, but only a drop in temperature by a couple of degrees or so. we'll start off friday morning,
10:57 pm
then, with a legacy of cloud out towards eastern areas of england. that's going to be clearing away. a few isolated showers, perhaps, in the wake of the front, but generally speaking, i think friday should be largely dry for most of us. the best of the brightness probably towards central areas at first and then out towards the east, but also some brighter skies, perhaps, further west. temperatures really around 9—12 degrees celsius for the vast majority. on saturday, again, a largely dry day. the brighter skies really towards the east. it will cloud over from the west through the afternoon, with heavy rain by the end of the day across northern ireland. once again, temperatures will peak between i! and ia degrees celsius, and that's where they'll tend to stay on sunday. that heavy rain clears eastwards as we head through sunday morning and the rest of the day should be largely dry with some spells of brightness. perhaps a few showers again on monday. bye— bye.
